No one plan to fall sick, particularly no kid plans to have a fever in the middle of the night, and this could be very scary as a parent.
Having gone through this multiple times with my kids , I now know better than to go into panic mode , it’s a very scary situation when you put your kids to be and they are fine , only for you to go check on them later to discover that one is running a high fever.
High fever in children can lead to convulsion , which involves shocks and seizures , so am going to be sharing with you what to do and how to handle such situations if they arise . Kids could run a fever for so many reasons, teething, malaria, fresh school resumption, infection and a host of other things, either way it’s not a pleasant experience.
As a mum the first thing that happens is that you start panicking , you really don’t need to , even if the child has started to convulsed , your ability to stay calm is the first most important step to handling the situation , panicking can make us do the wrong things , so please stay calm mama , your child will be fine.
HOW TO KNOW IT’S A FEVER
Always check with a thermometer once you have the slightest signs, never assume, once the thermometer reads above 37degrees you can be certain that there is a fever.
HOW TO BRING THE HIGH FEVER DOWN
The first thing to do is give a warm bath , let the child take a bath with water the same temperature as his body , don’t not use cold water , and the reason is this , if the child is already running a high temperature using cold water might trigger shock which will trigger convulsion and we must try to avoid that.
After the bath, give fluids as much as possible, water, juice and drink, just give as much to the child and also give paracetamol to help bring down the temperature.
Also you want to keep tipid sponging (dip a towel into water and mop the child’s body) the child with warm water till the temperature becomes normal, this is very important.
HOW TO DEAL WITH CONVULSION
If the child has started to convulsed already, which means he or she is having seizures, stretching and gnashing their teeth, the first thing to do is lay them straight up on a bed or couch, hold them still as they will be all over the place and put a spoon in-between their teeth to prevent them from biting their tongue.
Once you have done this, try to rub alcohol into a clean cloth and place it close to the child’s nose to perceive it, this helps with reviving them
And once the child is a bit calm, you will need to get the child to the hospital where they can be properly cared for.
Now so many things can go wrong when a child has either a high fever or is convulsing, when you don’t know what to do and any advice at that point will be acceptable because you just want your child to be fine, but we should also know that not all advise go well and it’s best to have first hand information to prevent you from doing the wrong thing and putting your child’s life at risk.
Here in Nigeria , there are so many different advice when a child is convulsing , some will say put the child’s feet close to fire, or rub onions in their eyes and all sorts of old wives tales , but please don’t do any of these things , you don’t want to start a problem that was never there.
I hope these tips have been helpful to you, please share this post, you never can tell who it will come handy to and leave me your questions in the comments section.
