Shawarma is basically smoked meat, veggies and spread that is wrapped with Pita bread, flat bread or what we call shawarma bread here in Nigeria, its so delicious and tasty that you cant stop at one bite, the bread is very plain and flat , but the choice of smoked meat is always very spiced and seasoned. If you have ever wondered how to make shawarma bread at home, then just grab you pen cos am about to show you just how to.
If you have enjoyed this meal before you will agree with me that there is a craving for more and more so how to make it from scratch, but for todays post am going to be showing you how to make shawarma bread from scratch in the comfort of your home. You can totally use this bread as a wrap for any filling, i have used it for eggs , veggies and mayo and it was yum.
First before i get into this recipe let me apologize for the break in posting here on the blog, trust me it wasn’t planned and it was very painful to be away for the last couple of weeks, but am back and all is well, so lets get into making this bread.
Pita bread/shawarma bread or flat bread whatever you choose to call it , is the simplest bread you can ever make as it requires no skill whatsoever and no Yeast, so if you are someone who has stayed away from making bread because of the fear of yeast , this recipe is one you can do and will love doing.
INGREDIENTS
2 cups all purpose flour
2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 tablespoon salt
1/3 cup butter
1 cup warm water.
DIRECTIONS
In a large bowl mix together all the dry ingredients, and gently add in the butter, using your hand mix in the butter till its well incorporated and you have a bread crumb like consistency.
Next you add in your warm water bits by bits as you will not finish the entire cup, add in the water in bits and mix till you get a dough that isnt too hard or too soft just like you can see below.
Once your dough is formed you will transfer to a smooth surface, and this is where the work begins, you will need to knead the dough till its smooth and let me tell you this is some serious arm workout.
Once the dough is smooth say about 15 minutes, you will transfer into a bowl and cover to rest for at least 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, bring out your dough and knead again for about 5 minutes then cut the dough into 4 parts or 5 five , take each cut out dough and gently form into a ball by rolling it in you hand while forming the shape of a ball, repeat this with all of the cut out dough.
Now take each dough that you have formed into a ball( the reason is so that you can get a circle or as close to a circle when you roll out) and using a rolling pin roll out till thin but not tearing up, if you like your bread to be thick then dont roll it out too tin, repeat the same process for the rest of the dough and set aside.
Place on meduim heat a large iron frying pan and once the pan is hot place the rolled out dough into the pan and allow to cook till the bottom is slightly brown like you can see in the picture, flip over to cook the other side and take out from the pan once its cooked, and repeat this will all your dough, place your freshly made sharwama bread/pita bread/ flat bread on a kitchen towel to keep it warm and moist . You can keep in the frezzer once they are room temperature and bring out to thaw when you are ready to use.
