Would you change your family name to your husband’s?
In this day and age, many women no longer change their names after getting married. In the past, women were expected to use her husband’s last name, and her own name then becomes what we commonly call the maiden name. (On a side note, it’s funny how many financial institutions still use a mother’s maiden name as a verification process!)
In fact, this change has evolved so quickly that the question or discussion on whether or not a woman should take on the husband’s family name hardly ever exists anymore when a couple talks about marriage. Just ask yourself if you have ever thought of changing your last name when you got married. Or if you are getting married, did it even occur to you to do this? I have to admit that I didn’t consider doing it at all!
However, I personally noted this trend about changing names to include the husband’s last name. I noticed that in Malaysia, if a woman were to marry a westerner, she tends to change her name to incorporate the western name. But if she marries a local where the husband’s name is no where close to sounding western, you are not likely to see a name change. I guess this is just how it is. We normally only agree to what sounds good and what we think may bring us more benefit, tangible or perceived, real or otherwise.
Who you truly are is a lot more important by what others call you. Even the most prestigious names in the world can be easily tainted by scandals. The world as we know it today is full of them right now. So what’s in a name these days? Just be you!
