What you should know about cervical cancer vaccination
Two years ago, science made history with the breakthrough of the world’s first vaccine to prevent against cancer, cervical cancer to be specific. This vaccine was developed by Merck Co & Inc and is approved by the US Food & Drug Administration. It is also currently available in Malaysia.
There are lots of articles out there that talk about how great these shots are but I’m not sure if they are saying all there is to it. Apparently, the vaccination is only most effective on young girls from the age of 9 and best administered before the start of any sexual activity. For ladies above the age of 20, the vaccination is not as effective.
Each cervical cancer vaccination costs between RM500 to RM700 depending on where you go. You would need to take 3 doses altogether if I’m not mistaken. Once vaccinated, it will protect you for up to 5 years. It is still unknown if a booster is necessary thereafter.
Having said all that, it is still advisable for women to take precaution and protect themselves against a possible deadly disease. Go to your gynae to ask for more information and consultation if you are interested to be vaccinated.
On a related note…since this is Pink October month, I’m glad that Every Woman’s Blog happens to be in some pink shades to match the Go Pink theme. Every Woman’s Blog is going pink in support of raising awareness about breast cancer.
