People buy more condoms during recessions

I had no idea about that until I read in today’s newspapers! A condom maker had claimed that things are going to look pretty good for them in the wake of recession hitting the economy. It said that the company found that people buy more condoms during times of recession because they were more cautious about pregnancies. I believe there is a lot of truth and logic in that. During difficult and uncertain times, people do not want to be caught unprepared with an addition in the family which will mean more financial burden on them.

Here are snippets of the news reported:

Demand for condoms usually rises when there is an economic slowdown. Condoms also sell well during major sporting international events such as the Olympics and World Cup, with their usage during these major events in host countries increasing with higher tourist arrivals.

Tee said people were unwilling to forego the pleasure of having sex during recession but were unwilling to shoulder additional commitment such as having children.

“Many people find that engaging in sexual activities is one way to relieve stress and de-stress in these trying times,” he said.

It’s a crime for men to wear women’s clothing

I didn’t know until today that it is illegal for a man to dress up in women’s clothings, and that you will be prosecuted in court! Four men who dressed in women’s clothes were found guilty of the crime and fined by the court of law. Read this story I spotted in the newspapers:

Fined RM20: Four guys who dressed like gals

JOHOR BARU: Four men were fined RM20 each by a magistrate’s court here for dressing like women for questionable purposes.

They were charged with committing the offence at around 12.15am along Jalan Tan Hiok Nee on Feb 6.

The accused Ng May Kee, 46, Tan Yong Sia, 45, Leong Thiam Tek, 55, and Foo Chek Kwang, 43, all pleaded guilty.

They pleaded with the judge for lenient sentences and said they knew what they did was wrong.

Magistrate Noor Aisyah Ahmad fined them RM20 each under Section 21 of the Minor Offences Act. They paid the fine.

Although this is categorised as a minor offence, I did find it strange that it is actually an act that is governed by law. What if a woman were to dress up like a guy? Is that also a minor offence?
