Single mom gets 4yrs for robbing a man of RM220

According to the press release, the woman is a single mother of 3 school going kids whose meager salary is insufficient to provide for her family. So she worked with 2 other accomplice and robbed a man of cash. For that, she is sentenced to 4 years jail while her two accomplice are still at large.

I thought the sentence of a 4-year jail term was a bit harsh on her. For that amount, which comes up to around US$70, it seems to be a petty theft at work. Sure enough, she collaborated with others to rob the man, and if he had more cash he may have been robbed of a larger sum.

Maybe it’s the fact that she’s a single mother who turned to vices to provide for her children that made me have a softer spot for her. I personally feel that the jail term is rather harsh. A 4 year jail term seems more appropriate for more serious crimes. What do you think? Or do you think I’m just a softie and that she deserves the sentence?

At the end of the day, I just feel really sorry for her kids who will be missing their mother for the next 4 years. And who’s to know if they will be well cared for because they have no other family members and will be looked after by their neighbour.

Not only do your go through a lot of physical changes, you may also have to deal with separation anxieties once you have delivered the baby. It’s quite inevitable that during the pregnancy you will feel some emotions towards the life that is growing inside you.

Most mothers will also tell you that at the first sight of the baby upon delivery, they are head over heels in love with the newborn. You may say that is so because that’s the mother’s flesh and blood. But to have carried a child in your womb for a good part of the year is bound to set you emotionally attached to the baby.

Knowing what it takes to be a surrogate mother, would you agree to be a one for the closest family member if they come to you for help? Or if someone offers you a lot of money to help them conceive, would you put yourself through it?

It also makes sense to start having kids at this age so that you do not have a big age gap between parents and children and therefore, hopefully, a more manageable generation gap. Not only does a huge age gap mean possible communication breakdown, it also brings into question the proper care and attention parents are able to give to their children as they themselves age and find many physical constraints not to mention possibly health matters that come with aging.

So when I read an article in the newspapers this morning about a 70 year old woman becoming a first time parent, I was shocked and wondered why would someone do something like that? The woman underwent IVF treatment to have her first baby so it must’ve been a conscious effort to conceive.

No matter how much a person yearns to be a parent, they also need to think about the future of the children they bring into the world. Is it responsible of them to bring kids into the world when they are gray and old? At age 70, one is hardly able to care properly for himself or herself, what more to care for a newborn?

Even if you have others who can help you care for your young child, what about the years ahead? What happens to the child when you pass on? He or she will still be at a tender age of growing up. Do people not think of what lies ahead for the children when the parents are gone when they are so young?

To be a parent means taking the sacrifices to give the very best to your children. No matter how much you love them, you need to think what’s best for them. Having children when you’re too old to take proper care of them is simply being irresponsible parents.

When I was done with the examination, I walked out of the doctor’s room and took a seat to wait for my medication to be dispensed. My eyes fell on the lady who had just taken her pregnancy test. She looked very young and vibrant, somewhere in her 20s, I would think. I then scanned her fingers and saw no sign of any wedding band. “Oh-uh!” was the first thing that came to my mind. Anyway, she got called into the doctor’s office and they talked very loudly, or maybe the walls are just too thin. All of us outside could hear them talking about when her last period was, and when her baby is due! 

I don’t know what else happened because I quickly took my medication, paid and left the clinic. But my thoughts never left me. I kept wondering if the girl is in fact married, and if she wasn’t, I wondered what must be going on in her head right then when she was told she’s pregnant. Obvious choices to choose from would be to marry the father of the child, be a single mom if marriage is not a good solution, and in the worst case scenario, she could make the painful decision not to have the baby. 

My thoughts then turned to thinking about women having babies out of wedlock and being single mothers. What must it be like to choose to be a single mom? It’s not easy, that’s for sure. I know of some strong-willed women who are single mothers and I salute how they uphold themselves. Though the society now does not regard single mothers as outcasts the way it was back in the olden days, many still frown upon the idea of someone being a single mother. People still gossip and talk about such women and it is not easy to get pass this. 

Can you imagine how strong a woman must be in order to be a single mother, not just to deal with how others judge her, but also to bring up a child on her own. Bringing up a child is already not an easy task with both doting parents, what more with just a single parent. Instead of being judged, I think these women should be respected for their bravery to embrace the difficult path ahead of them. At least they had the guts to decide on raising the baby and did not resort to the so-called easy way out by choosing abortion from the beginning.
