This post is shared with Every Woman’s Blog by Mannie. The author wishes to remain anonymous for good reasons and will only be known as the pseudonym above.

In today’s world, many women have shown their capabilities in the workforce. Many reputable companies employ women as part of their top and middle management team and these women have definitely earned these positions through their hard work to prove themselves. Now that women are amongst the equals with their male counterparts, I find that many men in the management team feel a certain level of resentment towards these women.

This is not as assumption. I’ve seen with my own eyes the many incidences where men back stab their women counterparts although the ladies have done nothing wrong apart from performing at their jobs and being looked up to by others. I take these negative actions by the men as jealousy and envy as women start to dominate the corporate world.

What’s more disturbing than these men at work are the men in the private lives of such women may also tend to feel some resentment for their corporate success. I think there’s some feeling of inferiority complex when their girlfriensd or wives are high ranked executives who make more money than many men, themselves included.

How does a woman in this situation continue to lead a happy life with a man who feels inferior next to her? Anyone has some great insights to share on what to do to help the relationship? This is more pressing than to deal with the pressure of those other men at the same work place, although it would be nice too to have that part of the situation sorted out. But I guess we can’t solve every problem that exists, especially if it’s not our own problem but someone else’s personal issues.

If you have any stories and tips you wish to share with Every Woman’s Blog, whether anonymously or not, you can send them to everywomansblog@gmail.com.

This morning I read a new article that said that women have been found to be the first to be retrenched by companies even though they may be a contributing factor to the productivity of the company. This finding is made known to the government and it has expressed concerns over this supposed gender discrimination at the work place.

You can read the full news article as reproduced here:

(Source: Star Online)

Women first to be retrenched

Employers are still discriminating against women when it comes to retrenchment.

Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Noriah Kasnon said the Government was concerned with the statistics as half of the workers retrenched recently in the current economic crisis were women, despite them making up only 35% of the country’s total workforce. “Female workers may be contributing towards their companies’ productivity.

“But when an economic slowdown occurs, they are still the first to be asked to go, with excuses that many of them tend to focus on their family or are pregnant regularly,” she said.

We would hold talks with both the Human Resources and the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperative Ministries on how we can create more jobs for women, she told reporters after launching a seminar on violence and sexual harassment against women at the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, here, yesterday.

On calls by the Bar Council and Women Parliamentary Caucus for stricter laws to protect privacy in the wake of the scandalous pictures involving former Selangor exco member and Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Elizabeth Wong, Noriah said the ministry would consider the proposal.

Earlier, in her speech, Noriah said violence and sexual harassment affected women from all classes, including professionals.

“Sexual harassment can happen everywhere, even at home. There is no point for victims to hide or shy away from filing complaints,” she said.

“Last year, the police recorded 3,906 cases of sexual harrassment, including molest. The Public Service Department took disciplinary action against 27 officers over such complaints between 2005 and last year.”

Since there is no solid proof to show that gender discrimination exists in the retrenching of female workers over male workers, no action can be taken against companies who lay off more women then men. And it is indeed going to be difficult to prove any kind of gender discrimination in such instances. And so, nothing is done except the government’s plan to help with creating more jobs for the laid off women workers.

It’s a pity, isn’t it, that such discrimination cannot be proven and thus handled appropriately by the labour department. And so this kind of act will continue to happen and companies will still get away with it.

Before, a home was a woman’s place where she worked and took care of her kids. But in recent decades, since many career women and working mothers have stamped their mark in the corporate world, many more women have climbed high on the corporate ladder. Many young and aspiring women are also vying to make the most of their career.

On the other side of the coin, there are also quite a number of women who wish to be home-makers. I would say the women in this category largely are new mothers who long to spend time with and watch their kids’ growing years intimately.

I’ve experienced both of these phases and I’m at the stage right now where nothing beats realising my dream of becoming a stay at home mom (SAHM). My definition of staying at home, however, is not solely restricted to performing the household chores and caring for the kids. More specifically, I would like to be a work-from-home-mom. But I suspect that when I actually am a work at home mom, I would likely be gallivanting with my kids all day long, bringing them out to have a time of their lives (not to mention my share of the fun too!).

Whilst the challenge of a career has brought about much satisfaction, confidence, great friendship and intellectual stimulations to life, I now have a different perspective and sense of wanting to spend more family time with loved ones. I’ve spoken to many moms, both the working ones and the ones I consider lucky enough to spend all their time home with their kids. Both sides offer differing views. It’s actually the case of the grass being greener on the other side of the fence.

Mothers who are at work like me, want very much to be able to quit from their jobs to be with their kids. Mothers who are actually home with their kids feel that they are better off at work. Many stay-at-home-moms have shared that taking a break from the rat race to watch their kids grow into beautiful personalities is rewarding, but there’s only so much that they can take staying away from the real adult world. Many have gone back to their working life after a couple of years staying home, and they have found the working world a refreshing change afterwards.

We women must be quite a confused bunch. We want to stay home with the kids and yet after some years, we decide that we’ve had enough and that having more serious adult conversations at work will do us more good in our wellbeing. So what is it that we truly want, to work or be home with the kids?
