A study done by Harvard Medical School in Boston in the US on over 3,000 women have found that there is a link of using talcum powder to contracting ovarian cancer as well as other health complications. So ladies, if you have been regularly using talcum powder, especially near your private parts, do take note.

Here are some interesting paragraphs I’ve picked up from an article:

Women who used talcum powder around their private parts daily have a 40% higher risk of getting ovarian cancer. Even those who only used it once a week experienced a 36% higher risk. Although concerns over the use of talc had previously already been surfaced through other studies, these latest figures obtained suggest that the risks are much higher than thought before.

The study team had hypothesized that, because talc, which is made through crushing, drying, and then milling of a mineral called hydrous magnesium silicate, has similar chemical properties to asbestos, it was possible that the same molecular and genetic pathways could play a part in the body’s ability to cope with these substances. Specific combinations or variations in certain genes would mean that a person was less able to metabolize or detoxify carcinogens – it would then follow that these people should have a higher risk of ovarian cancer with increased talc exposure.

There are some limitations to this study and it is suggested that more conclusive research may be needed to substantiate this claim. However, women are warned and it is up to us to take precaution of what could be.

Ladies, be aware of this. I received this interesting analysis of what makes a sanitary napkin and tampon, and I get the shivers thinking how we are regularly exposed to hazardous elements month after month for so many years! I will share with you the content of the email as I have received it, and let you decide whether or not there is any truth to what is said.

No wonder so many women in the world suffer from cervical cancer and womb tumors. Have you heard that tampon makers include asbestos in tampons? Why would they do this?

Because asbestos makes you bleed more, if you bleed more, you’re going to need to use more. Why isn’t this against the law since asbestos is so dangerous? Because the powers that be, in all their wisdom (not), did not consider tampons as being ingested, and, therefore, didn’t consider them illegal or dangerous.

A woman getting her Ph.D. at University of Colorado at Boulder sent the following: ‘I am writing this because women are not being informed about the dangers of something most of us use: tampons. I am taking a class this month and I have been learning a lot about biology and women, including much about feminine hygiene. Recently we have learned that tampons are actually dangerous. I’ll tell you this – after learning about this in our class, most of the females wound up feeling angry and upset with the tampon industry, and I for one, am going to do something about it To start, I want to inform everyone I can, and email is the fastest way that I know how.

HERE IS THE SCOOP:
Tampons contain two things that are potentially harmf ul: Rayon (for absorbency), and dioxin (a chemical used in bleaching the products). The tampon industry is convinced that we, as women, need bleached white products in order to view the product as pure and clean. The problem here is that the dioxin, which is produced in this bleaching process, can lead to very harmful problems for a woman. Dioxin is potentially carcinogenic cancer-associated and is toxic to the immune and reproductive systems. It has also been linked to endometriosis and lower sperm counts for men. For both sexes, it breaks down the immune system.

Last September, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported that there really is no set ‘acceptable’ level of exposure to dioxin given that it is cumulative and slow to disintegrate. The real danger comes from repeated contact Karen Couppert ‘Pulling the Plug on the Tampon Industry’. I’d say using about 4-5 tampons a day, five days a month, for 38 menstruating years is ‘repeated contact’, wouldn’t you? Rayon contributes to the danger of tampons and dioxin because it is a highly absorbent substance. Therefore, when fibers from the tampons are left behind in the vagina (as usually occurs), it creates a breeding ground for the dioxin. It also stays in a lot longer than it would with just cotton tampons. This is also the reason why TSS (toxic shock syndrome) occurs.

WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES?

Using feminine hygiene products that aren’t bleached and that are all cotton. Other feminine hygiene products (pads/napkins) contain dioxin as well, but they are not nearly as dangerous since they are not in direct contact with the vagina. The pads/napkins need to stop being bleached, but, obviously, tampons are the most dangerous.

So, what can you do if you can’t give up using tampons? Use tampons that are made from 100% cotton, and that are UNBLEACHED. Unfortunately, there are very few companies that make these safe tampons. They are usually only found in health food stores.

Countries all over the world (Sweden , Germany , British Columbia , etc.) have demanded a switch to this safer tampon, while the U.S. has decided to keep us in the dark about it. In 1989, activists in England mounted a campaign against chlorine bleaching. Six weeks and 50,000 letters later,
the makers of sanitary products switched to oxygen bleaching (one of the green methods available) (MS magazine, May/June 1995).

AND FOR THOSE OF US WHO USE SANITARY NAPKINS/PADS:

If u ever wondered what were the ingredients that made popular brands so ‘free and light and carefree’, well here’s the bit: The material that makes the pad so paper THIN, is cellulose gel. Yeap, it’s not even cotton!

DO NOT wear the same pad for more than 3 hours of a maximum. After this duration, the genital area is prone to bacterial action and may result in cervical cancer or other complications!

Two years ago, science made history with the breakthrough of the world’s first vaccine to prevent against cancer, cervical cancer to be specific. This vaccine was developed by Merck Co & Inc and is approved by the US Food & Drug Administration. It is also currently available in Malaysia.

There are lots of articles out there that talk about how great these shots are but I’m not sure if they are saying all there is to it. Apparently, the vaccination is only most effective on young girls from the age of 9 and best administered before the start of any sexual activity. For ladies above the age of 20, the vaccination is not as effective.

Each cervical cancer vaccination costs between RM500 to RM700 depending on where you go. You would need to take 3 doses altogether if I’m not mistaken. Once vaccinated, it will protect you for up to 5 years. It is still unknown if a booster is necessary thereafter.

Having said all that, it is still advisable for women to take precaution and protect themselves against a possible deadly disease. Go to your gynae to ask for more information and consultation if you are interested to be vaccinated.

On a related note…since this is Pink October month, I’m glad that Every Woman’s Blog happens to be in some pink shades to match the Go Pink theme. Every Woman’s Blog is going pink in support of raising awareness about breast cancer.

For a year years now I’ve heard that most plastic bottles are harmful. Here’s a little attempt to help more women understand why this is so.

Most of us re-use mineral water bottles or even soft drink bottles as containers at home or to bring out to offices or simply just to leave a spare bottle of water in the car for just-in-case purposes. Now, before you do this, know that it is especially bad to leave bottles in the car where the bottles are exposed to sunlight and therefore tend to be heated. When the plastic bottles are heated, they release harmful chemicals and they sip into the water. Continuous and excessive consumption of such chemicals can cause the ingestion of carcinogen in the body. For more details of what carcinogen is and how it relates to cancer, you can refer to information shared about it on Wiki.

Having said the above, it is also good news to note that not all plastic bottles or containers are harmful. There are many grades of plastics used to product bottles and containers, and you can actually see the difference by different codes printed on the plastic containers. Most of these codes are found at the bottom of the container or bottle. The code is in the form of a number, from 1 to 7. As an example, the code would normally look like this:

The higher the number, the safer the bottle. Generally, as a rule of thumb, plastic containers with number 7 are safest to use. Most polycarbonate containers are numbered 7 and therefore more recommended than any other types of bottles. These are largely available in the market today from small bottles to large containers, so do yourself a favour and use these instead of re-using the ones you buy drinks in. By all means recyle those bottles by putting them in the recycle bins, but not in your home as re-usable bottles.

If you still do not feel comfortable with the use of plastics, you can always opt for glass containers as this is definitely a better choice than plastic. For parents concerned about their babies’ milk bottles, you can check the numbering at the bottom of the milk bottle too. Most of them should be 7 and are steamer safe for your to regularly sterilise them. There are glass alternatives too even for milk bottles but then again, you might want to consider the practicality and safety of using glass for kids since it’s easily breakable.

Let’s stay well.
