Four year jail for single mother who robbed a harsh penalty?
I read a headline in the local newspapers that read:
Single mom gets 4yrs for robbing a man of RM220
According to the press release, the woman is a single mother of 3 school going kids whose meager salary is insufficient to provide for her family. So she worked with 2 other accomplice and robbed a man of cash. For that, she is sentenced to 4 years jail while her two accomplice are still at large.
I thought the sentence of a 4-year jail term was a bit harsh on her. For that amount, which comes up to around US$70, it seems to be a petty theft at work. Sure enough, she collaborated with others to rob the man, and if he had more cash he may have been robbed of a larger sum.
Maybe it’s the fact that she’s a single mother who turned to vices to provide for her children that made me have a softer spot for her. I personally feel that the jail term is rather harsh. A 4 year jail term seems more appropriate for more serious crimes. What do you think? Or do you think I’m just a softie and that she deserves the sentence?
At the end of the day, I just feel really sorry for her kids who will be missing their mother for the next 4 years. And who’s to know if they will be well cared for because they have no other family members and will be looked after by their neighbour.

I too feel its pretty harsh. It is wrong to rob but indirectly she robs so that she can feed the kids. Pretty sad..

We may feel that it is a very harsh judgment but the law is the law . The severity of the judgment depends on those judges and your luck.
If you are unlucky ,you get the full brunt of the law. Another judge may put her on a bond with good behaviour if this is her first offense.
Those blue collar crimes who steal millions only get a maximum of seven years and on good behaviour , will get released with 1/3 remissions.
Putting her in jail may make her a hardcore criminal and destroy her life and family. She should be send to a rehabilitation center and aid be given to her to help with her family.
There was a case of a woman who works at a canteen during the day but a prostitute during the night to support her own family and her parents.
The recessions has landed on our shores and crime is quite rampant these days. Be extra careful when you go out .

Iris, it’s exactly what I feel too. What a pity it has to end like this for the kids.
Laura, true, I do agree that a law is a law, and she is definitely very unlucky to be handed out such a long jail term. I read about that woman working as a prostitute to support her family. I was just amazed that her husband isn’t against it! Planning to write a post about it soon.

sorry i dont think like the rest of you. My way of thinking is if you steal for any reason you should lose one hand at a hospital.what is she teaching this children. Steal twice and lose the other hand and dont expect any help after because you are disabled (YOUR FAULT)!!!!

if you were in the mindset of a single hardworking mother in this shitty economy, which would be the best of two bad choices to you? Stealing money to take care of your kids or losing them to the system because you are human and made poor choices in the past thus leading to being single with 3 children? People make mistakes but some communist like you never look into the reasons crime happens. move to china or something.

there’s no way for petty theft she would get that amt of jail time without it being armed and/or violent unless she has a prior criminal record. even if armed, a reasonable judge likely hear her whole story and place her on some sort of probation after the shortest mandatory sentence possible in the situation. a judge is supposed to look out for the best interest of the children. so hopefully she will have her sentence reduced or successfully appeal the entire sentence. for the person who commented about “what is she teaching these children” is totally ignoring the fact that according to the facts given above she stole out of desperate necessatity so she could BE with her children, not out of lazy, quick money. they probably expected the victim of the robbery to have more cash though because risking jail for $70 seems very desperate–something a crackhead would do.
