crying girl 300x254 How do rape victims and their loved ones cope with life?

Many of us who are not in the shoes of a rape victim don’t tend to give much thoughts and consideration to a woman who has been a rape victim. Yes, we may feel for the woman at the time we hear about her being a victim and her ordeal of being sexually assaulted. But do we really think about the emotional scar and how her life may change because she is a rape victim?

Imagine the mental anguish that lives with her for having been through such a terrible violation. Imagine her facing her family and friends with shame, although she really should not bring this onto herself. Imagine how insecure she may feel with her boyfriend or husband who knows about her ordeal. It takes so much strength, courage and energy to just face up to herself to accept the fact that she has been raped, not to mention the stress of facing people around her.

Do you also wonder how a boyfriend or a husband of a rape victim feels about it all? Surely they are not proud of the fact that his girlfriend or wife was raped, and I’m sure they do not talk about it with others. Probably not even with his victimised girlfriend or wife, because it probably isn’t right to voice out his pain and frustrations about her being raped. Or should he? Does he feel or think any less of her? How does a man cope with his partner’s rape?

A rape victim needs a lot of support from her loved ones. There are also helpful rape support groups or women support groups as well as other resources that she can tap on to help her heal. She must know that the rape was never her fault no matter what others say and think. She must also learn how to live as a rape survivor and not a rape victim. Finally, I would imagine that a rape victim needs a lot of patience from family and friends around her, for her to regain her self confidence and self worth, as well as to get back on her feet to live life courageously and with dignity.
