A woman aged 60 in Canada went for fertility treatments in India and conceived twins. She gave birth to them at 7 weeks prematurely and both mother and babies are in intensive care unit.

The full story is as follows:

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) – A spokesperson for the Calgary Health Region says a 60-year-old woman has given birth at a city hospital.

The western Canadian health region would not give details, but CBC Newsworld reported Thursday that the woman had twins after fertility treatments in India.

The CBC said Ranjit Hayer’s two boys were delivered seven weeks prematurely by cesarean section at Calgary’s Foothills Hospital earlier this week.

The mother was recovering in intensive care and doctors said the twins were doing well in neo-natal intensive care.

Source: The Star Online

Earlier when I read that a first-time mother gave birth to her baby at age 70, I was baffled and I wondered why people at such age would bother to go for fertility treatments just because they long for kids. At that stage, they should be more responsible and think about the future of the kids that they bring up.

It looks like a lot of mothers are quite selfish and don’t think enough about the consequences of the children when the elderly parents pass on while they are still young and defenseless.

A 92-year old woman has been hiding a secret – she has been pregnant for 60 years! As you would have guessed, the baby in her womb is dead. Back in 1948 when she was pregnant with the baby, it was found that her baby had died in her womb. She didn’t have the money to remove her dead baby and thus continued to carry it in her womb till now. You can read the full story here.

It’s sad that poverty has caused such an incident. And I cannot imagine what it is like to know that you are carrying a dead foetus inside you for years! Even if poverty is the cause of you not being able to do something about it, maybe a little determination and will to do something would’ve set you on the right path to do the right thing.

I wonder if the woman did this because she didn’t want to let go of her baby, or it was really poverty that drove her to keep her dead baby with her forever.

Being a surrogate mother is not an easy thing to do. Normally, women who agree to be a surrogate mother for a couple would normally be a close family member or someone who is paid a lot of money. I can imagine how hard it is to be a surrogate mother. The things you put your body through during pregnancy, labour and childbirth, and even the care you need after birth.

Not only do your go through a lot of physical changes, you may also have to deal with separation anxieties once you have delivered the baby. It’s quite inevitable that during the pregnancy you will feel some emotions towards the life that is growing inside you.

Most mothers will also tell you that at the first sight of the baby upon delivery, they are head over heels in love with the newborn. You may say that is so because that’s the mother’s flesh and blood. But to have carried a child in your womb for a good part of the year is bound to set you emotionally attached to the baby.

Knowing what it takes to be a surrogate mother, would you agree to be a one for the closest family member if they come to you for help? Or if someone offers you a lot of money to help them conceive, would you put yourself through it?

Nowadays, married couples in their 30s who have yet to have kids are often pressured to start their families as the woman’s biological clock ticks. I’m sure many in this phase of life can agree with this being the norm in their lives.

It also makes sense to start having kids at this age so that you do not have a big age gap between parents and children and therefore, hopefully, a more manageable generation gap. Not only does a huge age gap mean possible communication breakdown, it also brings into question the proper care and attention parents are able to give to their children as they themselves age and find many physical constraints not to mention possibly health matters that come with aging.

So when I read an article in the newspapers this morning about a 70 year old woman becoming a first time parent, I was shocked and wondered why would someone do something like that? The woman underwent IVF treatment to have her first baby so it must’ve been a conscious effort to conceive.

No matter how much a person yearns to be a parent, they also need to think about the future of the children they bring into the world. Is it responsible of them to bring kids into the world when they are gray and old? At age 70, one is hardly able to care properly for himself or herself, what more to care for a newborn?

Even if you have others who can help you care for your young child, what about the years ahead? What happens to the child when you pass on? He or she will still be at a tender age of growing up. Do people not think of what lies ahead for the children when the parents are gone when they are so young?

To be a parent means taking the sacrifices to give the very best to your children. No matter how much you love them, you need to think what’s best for them. Having children when you’re too old to take proper care of them is simply being irresponsible parents.

In Asia, many believe that fruits like pineapples and watermelons are unsafe to be consumed by pregnant women because they may cause miscarriages. Apparently, unripe papayas may also cause miscarriages in pregnant women. Therefore it is advised that pregnant women should stay away from eating unripe papayas. In India, however, ripen papayas are also said to be a threat to pregnancies and pregnant women have strictly stayed away from eating any papayas, ripe or unripe.

Unripe papayas contain high concentration of latex that can cause uterine contractions. These contractions can in turn cause a miscarriage. If you search on this topic on the internet, you will find many contradicting opinions. But I choose to be safe than be sorry. It doesn’t hurt to stay away from the fruit and whatever goodness is found in the fruits can probably be found in safer substitutes. I’m no risk taker.

I read up on this story from several sources and there’s one that wrote about a study performed on rats to test the effects of ripe and unripe papayas on pregnant rats. If you would like to read it, you can download it here. You will need to have Adobe Reader installed to read this file. You may even want to do your own research by searching the web.
