Personally I feel that after a hard day’s work, it’s best to destress and leave the worries behind by soaking in a hot bath tub. Relax even more some music in the background, light some candles and dim the lights. Then just close your eyes and lean back. It’s a wonderful feeling.

Better still if you can throw in some aromatherapy sea bath salt and watch it disolve into the water. Choose lavender if you like, as it helps even more to relax the mind and body. Of course there are others which are also equally relaxing if lavender doesn’t tickle your fancy. But it has been the most popularly used one for relaxation.

Sometimes I also add some dead sea bath salt and lightly do a scrub halfway through the bath. Feels not only energised but totally cleansed too. I guess it’s a two in one with a dead sea salt bath.

What about you? What are your ways to unwind and relax after a hard day’s work or when you are under a lot of stress? One other way of mine is to read or watch some TV programs. For the purpose of relaxation, I will choose easy reads like chick flicks and watch slap stick comedies. These are just mindless fun stuff that don’t require any thinking.

Do share other ways so that we each learn how best to take our stress away. These days most people are highly stressed and it really pays to find ways to destress ourselves the best way possible.

A study done by Harvard Medical School in Boston in the US on over 3,000 women have found that there is a link of using talcum powder to contracting ovarian cancer as well as other health complications. So ladies, if you have been regularly using talcum powder, especially near your private parts, do take note.

Here are some interesting paragraphs I’ve picked up from an article:

Women who used talcum powder around their private parts daily have a 40% higher risk of getting ovarian cancer. Even those who only used it once a week experienced a 36% higher risk. Although concerns over the use of talc had previously already been surfaced through other studies, these latest figures obtained suggest that the risks are much higher than thought before.

The study team had hypothesized that, because talc, which is made through crushing, drying, and then milling of a mineral called hydrous magnesium silicate, has similar chemical properties to asbestos, it was possible that the same molecular and genetic pathways could play a part in the body’s ability to cope with these substances. Specific combinations or variations in certain genes would mean that a person was less able to metabolize or detoxify carcinogens – it would then follow that these people should have a higher risk of ovarian cancer with increased talc exposure.

There are some limitations to this study and it is suggested that more conclusive research may be needed to substantiate this claim. However, women are warned and it is up to us to take precaution of what could be.

Before yesterday, I’ve never really learned what ectopic pregnancy is. I’ve only recently heard of this term when I was reading up on pregnancy related articles. It was only when a dear friend wrote to break the shocking news that she suffered from it that I took more notice and read more about it.

Ectopic pregnancy, also known as tubal pregnancy, is a condition where the embryo implants itself outside of the uterus or the womb. The failure to implant itself inside the womb will result in the embryo settling down in several possible places in the body, most commonly being the fallopian tube, or the ovary, abdomen and even the cervix.

When the embryo grows quickly in the confines of the fallopian tube, it pushes against the tube and when it’s too big for the tube, it can cause the fallopian tube to burst, thereby causing profuse bleeding and severe pain in the abdomen. When a woman loses too much blood too quickly this way, it can lead to death. She should be immediately sent to the emergency room for treatment.

At this juncture, the usual treatment would be surgery to stop the bleeding and it is recommended that the fallopian tube be removed. Unfortunately, the baby will not survive. In cases where the discovery of ectopic pregnancy is at an early stage, it can be treated with an injection to stop the growth of the embryo before it causes the mother bodily damage.

What causes a woman to suffer from ectopic pregnancy? Here’s what I found from Women’s Health:

Usually, some sort of anatomical problem exists which traps the fertilized egg in the tube. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), which leads to scarring of the tubes, is the most common cause, comprising about 30%-50% of all ectopics. Pelvic infections include chlamydia and gonorrhea.

There are a number of other factors that will put a woman at risk for an ectopic. These factors include:

a) Congenital anatomical abnormalities
b) Tumors or cysts in the tubes
c) Fibroids in the uterus, which block the tube’s entrance into the uterus
d) Endometriosis
e) Scar tissue from outside the tube, which causes constriction on the tube. This may be caused by other problems or surgery in the abdomen or pelvis, such as appendicitis
f) Previous tubal surgery: previous ectopic, tubal ligation, tubal rejoining
g) Delayed passage of the conceptus to the uterus. The conceptus may be fertilized in one tube but cause an ectopic in the opposite tube because it reaches that tube via passage through the abdominal cavity or through the uterus and back across into the other tube. Because of the increased amount of time required to travel these lengths, the conceptus becomes too big to complete its roundabout trip to the uterus.
h) Current use of progestin-only oral contraceptives
I) Infertility treatment

While there is a higher percentage of ectopic pregnancy in IUD users, the IUD does not cause ectopic pregnancies. Rather, it functions to prevent uterine pregnancies, so the only ones that can result are ectopic. The same sort of relationship exists between the use of emergency contraceptives and ectopic pregnancy. This type of contraception prevents implantation of the fertilized egg in the uterus; therefore, only ectopic pregnancies can result. Three weeks after a woman takes an emergency contraceptive, she should see her doctor for a follow-up so that, if she does develop an ectopic, it can be caught early.

Ladies, read and re-read the last paragraph above. If you are prone to taking emergency contraceptives, beware. It’s best that you do not put yourself at risk.

Can a woman who has suffered an ectopic pregnancy get pregnant successfully again? The answer is yes. Here are some statistics to show the fertility rate of women after an ectopic pregnancy. Source: Women’s Health.

a) Chance of subsequent pregnancy: 50%
b) Chance of another ectopic: 15%
c) Chance of spontaneous abortion during next pregnancy: 15-20%

There are some factors that will decrease a woman’s chance of getting pregnant again following an ectopic pregnancy, including:

a) Over age 35
b) Previous problems with fertility

Unfortunately, there really are no known ways to prevent ectopic pregnancies. It happens to 1 in 200 women. I suppose if you do not have any of the above mentioned conditions that are factors that can cause such a pregnancy, your chances of an ectopic pregnancy is pretty low.

A few days ago I read an article in the newspaper about a female sex worker who contracted the deadly AIDS disease from her many years in this line of work. In her story, she talked about her live as a sex worker as well as how difficult it proved to be to get her clients to use contraceptives. And because of the refusal of her clients to use condoms, it has resulted in her contracting AIDS today.

In cases where men are irresponsible as to refuse the use of contraceptives as a measure of safety to prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), is there nothing else that the women can do? Most are likely to think so. But perhaps this is because they are forgetting that women too can use contraceptives to protect themselves from STDs.

There is the female version of the male condom called femidom which works in pretty much the same way as the condoms, except that it is to be worn by women. Not only do femidoms help to prevent unwanted pregnancies, more importantly they provide leverage for women to have safe sex.

There could be many who question whether the use of femidoms are safe and comfortable, and whether the process of putting on the femidom is a mood killer in the bed room. Before we even think about the negativity of using this method of contraception, perhaps one should question the consequences of not using any contraception at all.

To answer the above question of whether the femidom is safe and comfortable for a woman’s use, I found a rather reassuring explanation of how femidom works for women. This paragraph is taken from BritishCondoms.co.uk:

Made from polyurethane, Femidom is a disposable, odourless sheath specially designed to protect women by lining the inside of the vagina. Femidom is pre-lubricated and it warms immediately to your body temperature. It is soft and comfortable to use, and gives you the sensitivity you require during love making. There is an inner ring, inside the sheath, which helps you insert Femidom as quickly and easily as a tampon. It is stronger than latex, odourless, causes no allergic reactions, and, unlike latex, may be used with both oil-based and water-based lubricants. It can be inserted prior to intercourse, is not dependent on the male erection, and does not require immediate withdrawal after ejaculation. With correct and consistent use, Femidom is as effective as other barrier methods and has practically no side effects or risks.

It is hoped that women will not resign to the myth that practising safe sex and preventing STDs is the sole responsibility that lies in men. We too can take control of this and be proactive to do something about it. Be smart and stay healthy!

Imagine this, you’re engaged to be married and you’re thinking of how to start preparing for the big day. One of the things that many brides-to-be will consider doing is a medical examination. Would you insist that your spouse-to-be do a prenuptial medical test?

It is actually quite a good practise to do a health screen together to know how you each stand in your medical condition. But when it comes to doing a medical test to check for possible sexual disease like HIV, I can imagine that it can get quite nerve-wrecking.

In some faith, such medical examinations are compulsory so there is no discussion about it, whether to do it or not. I guess it works well that way for couples who actually want to have this done. But for those who are not required to do this but want their partner to undergo a test, how do you even begin to talk about it?

Is such a medical examination important to you before you marry the love of your life?
